Only Murders in the Building- Season 2, A Review

The truth is all in how you frame it.

Only Murders in the Building Season 1 Review (Top 10 2021).

The second season of Only Murders follows the crime solving trio as they are once again pulled into a murder mystery at the Arconia. Picking up were season one ended, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short, Schmigadoon) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) have all been arrested for Bunny’s (Jayne Houdyshell) murder after discoverong a bloody Mabel standing over the body. Released on caution the trio decide to investigate again, starting up a second season of their podcast, hopefully to this time clear their own names.

Bunny however was not the most popular resident and her overbearing behaviour and the discovery of a stolen painting leads to more suspects than initially anticipated. Charles, Oliver and Mabel may have their work cut out for them this time around but if anyone can solve it they can. All they need to do is put the pieces together and avoid being framed by the real killer, easy right?

Bunny’s murder made for another compelling mystery this season, especially since our trio had the added task of clearing their own names from the police investigation. Bunny was a character we’d come to know and love in season one and so it felt a lot more personal this time around compared to Tim who we barely met before he was killed. The stolen painting storyline and the discovery of the hidden tunnels also added an extra layer of excitement and I loved the idea of the killer being able to travel unseen, it felt exciting and scary for our characters. The end reveal and many twists and turns were all brilliantly dome and I loved how some of these storylines had been set up in early season one, it showed a high level of mystery planning from the writing crew which is always nice.

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez continue to be a brilliantly unexpected trio in this series and I just love the frendship between Charles, Oliver and Mabel. Bonding over their love of crime the trio play off of each other wonderfully and the chemistry is just off the charts, I love every single shared scene. Martin and Short maybe be old school comedy legends but Gomez is able to hold up her own and bring a you her perspective and hilarious modernisation to the group, resulting in some really heartwarming scenes.

Podcasts also continue to be a big theme this season and the show definitely plays into the national obsession with true crime. In this day and age anybody can be a detective (or think they can be one anyway) and I liked how the trio continued recording throughout, the narration voiceover adds a nice touch. The podcast element also remains essential to the storyline, with some fantastic callbacks to the first season.

Season two ended on a shocking cliffhanger with guest star Paul Rudd seemingly being murdered during the opening night of Oliver’s new play. Going into season 3 I am so excited for this new storyline and to explore this new location. I love the theatre and especially love mysteries set at the theatre and I feel like it’s going to ne a really fun season. The show has already been full of theatre references and guest stars and I feel like season 3 is really going to be Oliver’s time to shine, I already can’t wait.

Overall I really enjoyed this second season of Only Murders and continue to love this show for the blend of mystery and comedy it provides. Season two’s mystery was just as good as the first and I loved trying to figure out who had killed Bunny. Martin, Short and Gomez continue to work wonderfully together and I already can’t wait for season 3, it’s going to be brilliant.
